Hearing from God Daily

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realise what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right. It is God’s way of preparing us in every way. Fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do.”

(2 Tim 3:16-17 NLT)

Set aside a suitable time each day to do a daily ‘devotion’ where you can make time to hear from God. The best time is when you are at your best, whether this is in the morning or at night. But, remember, consistent habits produce consistent results!

You will need:
Bible - All Scripture is inspired by God (2 Tim 3:16)
Journal - To write notes about what God has said to you
Pen - To write out your devotion
Reading Plan - Downloadable booklet below – select the reading plan that best suits you.
Notepad or diary - To jot down anything that distracts you during your devotion
Time - Allocate increasing amounts as your habit develops

Begin by reading the allocated passages, but only focus on as much as you can manage that day. Don’t feel guilty if you can’t get through it all.

Keep an index in the front of your journal to record the date, the verse and the topic for future reference.

Write your devotional entry on one page using one verse that stands out from your reading, using the SOAP method described below. An example is shown at the end of the downloadable booklet. (Remember that when we wash ourselves with the Word of God according to Ephesians 5:26, it helps to use a little SOAP!).

S cripture - Write the specific verse out in full.
O bservation - Write a sentence or two describing the context or specific points of interest. What is the verse saying in general?
A pplication - What can you do to apply this verse to your life? Write a sentence or two with specific action points.
P rayer - Write a prayer of response to God based on what you are committing to do.

Pray for other needs too, but include some praise and thanksgiving.

Review your devotions weekly to check your application progress and any answers to prayer.
